Here are some photos of Jimmy in his Halloween costume. For the uninformed out there ( like myself ) he is Optimus Prime , One of those Transformer characters who, I personally never heard of, but seems to be pretty well know among mere mortals. In any case, Jimmy and I worked on creating this robot from scratch until One o’clock in the morning on Halloween eve.
Then we woke up at five AM, to finish painting it. Sorry you can’t really see the legs in the photos., but they were awesome, trust me. So anyway, at six o’clock AM , I drove Jimmy to Bronx Science High School, because he couldn’t ride the trains like that .
Well here’s where the story gets a bit interesting. You see, Jimmy evidently had to stand up in all his classes that day, and during 7th period, they were having this impromptu best costume contest in the Cafeteria, when out of nowhere, these six Korean students, who belong to a “club” called “Freshman Friday” thought it would be funny to bring Jimmy down because he couldn’t get up. So they succeeded in doing that, and Jimmy was understandably really, really pissed at that because his costume was a bit damaged in the fracas.
Anyway, he was able to fix the damage, and did take the subway down to the Halloween parade in Greenwich village. I decided to pick him up in the city, and found myself getting swept up into the parade traffic from which I could not escape. This went on for a good hour and a half., literally surrounded by thousands of really strange and scary people. I must have called him literally twenty times to meet me at different locations
“Jim, meet me at 16th and Sixth” , “ Forget that , meet me at 12th and Lex” , etc. All the while , Jim is complaining “ but dad, I cant walk in this thing”….
Finally I gave up and parked the car, and Jim had to walk to meet me.
I have to say, it was one of the funniest sights I have seen in a long time.
I am looking around amidst the confusion when suddenly, Jim and Rachael appear across the street. Jim is struggling to walk, so he’s actually walking like the Stay-Puff Marshmallow Man, because his legs are so damned BIG, and Rachael, who is dressed as Dorothy, from wizard of Oz, is carrying Jimmy’s arms…..I only wish I had a camera.
When he went to school the next day, it seems Jim overheard all kinds of rumors abuzz about the “transformer” incident , the latest one being that he was thrown down a flight of stairs, etc, etc…
But sometimes karma sometimes has a way of balancing things out,:
It turns out that the boys who did the dastardly deed were caught, and are in trouble with the school now,
and it seems their girlfriends slapped the crap out of them because they felt bad for Jim, and today,
Jim’s friend Joe, who is a big dude from his Global class, got into a fight with two Korean boys over the incident.
Jim says that some students are saying stuff, like “ I got your back, man!” , and “ Go Transformer!” as he walks through the halls….. kind of like Ferris Bueller,
Anyway, I just wanted to share what started out as a humdrum day with you.
